Decorative Wrought Iron
Hampshire blacksmith Cliff at Hampshire Metalcraft uses top quality wrought iron and steel.
Wrought iron, a traditional metal, has been used by blacksmiths for millennia. It was the first truly useful and usable iron and has proven its worth to humanity since the Iron Age. It was only in Victorian times that wrought iron began to be replaced on a large scale by mild steel .
Wrought iron is composed of iron and a small proportion of silicates. These silicates give wrought iron its unique appearance, making it a beautiful medium to combine stunning form with solid function.
Wrought iron is rightly seen by people as being superior to more modern metals and artificial materials. This is due to wrought irons workability under the hammer. Apart from that is the resistance wrought iron has to corrosion, caused by the silicates reducing susceptibility to rust.
Prior to the development of commercially effective steel-making methods wrought iron was far more common than today. These days many products are made from mild steel with wrought iron a rarity but Cliff continues to work with wrought iron through period pieces and restoration work.
